From the Prez - June 2025

Coffee Bean

The Coffee Bean metrogaine held in Launceston was a successful and well-supported event. A big thank you to everyone who took part. Your participation and the dedication of volunteers who made the event run smoothly are what keep these events going strong.

The coffee theme was Christine Brown’s brainchild. Chris reports that she was delighted that the winning team took exactly the event duration of 4 hours to visit every checkpoint on the course. It couldn’t have been planned any better. Many people expressed how much they had enjoyed the event, especially if it was their first metrogaine. When Chris was taking the promotional posters around to the coffee shops there was great interest and support from the locals.

The event was won by David Atkinson and David Brooke who ran an amazing 39kms in the 4 hours. James and Ainsley Scott won the mixed category, and Sophie Best and Clara Menard the womens category. The event results and winners’ route can be found on the RT results page.

Upcoming RT events

Next, we’re heading back to the south of the state. The Roche’s Rumble will be held on Sunday August 24th in the Hobart region. Whether you’re in the mood for a walk or it’s time to give your bike tyres a boost, this is a great opportunity to shake off your winter inactivity.

Our next bush event will be held on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of December in the Midlands. Preparation for this event is progressing well. If you interested in helping at this event, send an email to Bernard Walker.

At this stage we have no events planned for 2026. Contact us if you are interested in setting a course for an event next year. You won't be on your own! The RT committee can assist with area selection and approvals, produce maps and organise the team needed to run the event.

Australasian Champs in Tasmania

I’m sure it was only last week that Tasmania last hosted an Australasian Champs. However, this was back in 2019, just months before COVID arrived. Tasmania will be hosting the Australasian Champs again in early 2027. I’m pleased to announce that RT committee member Stephen Yam (also known as China Mug) has taken on the role of Event Coordinator. Preparations for this event have begun, initially selecting and gaining approval for an event area. We’ll soon be filling key positions for this big event, but there will be many opportunities to help in other roles and on the event weekend. There will be more details in an upcoming newsletter. Email if you are interested in joining the organising team.

Positions Vacant – Social Media, Newsletter Editor or Promotion

We need some enthusiasts to join the RT team to assist with social media, the newsletter, and promotion. Duties would depend on your interests, but could include running our Facebook Page, and promoting RT events to related activities (such as orienteering, trail running, and adventure racing). You might also enjoy being involved in writing or proofreading content for our newsletter and website. Contact us for more details.

2025 World Champs

The 19th World Rogaining Championships are being held on July 5th and 6th in Spain. See wrc2025.org. There will be live tracking during the event. All the best to RT members Christine Brown, Thorlene Egerton, Jon Sutcliffe, Lucy Hawthorne and their teammates who are competing in the event.

Roche’s Rumble - 24th August 2025

By Jaymee Knoll and Rowan Tilley.

The Roche’s Rumble Bike and Foot Metrogaine is coming up on Sunday, 24th August. Beginning from Lauderdale, navigate to as many checkpoints as you can in 4 hours. In teams of 2 to 5 people, choose if you would like to tackle the event on foot or on bikes. Ranging from Seven Mile Beach and Acton Park in the north to Goat’s Bluff in the south, the map includes Roches Beach, Clifton Beach, Mortimer Bay, and many scenic coastal and inland trails and reserves. Roche’s Rumble offers something for everyone: from a cruisy outing with opportunities to stop for coffee, browse street libraries, and spot bandicoots darting through the scrub, to a challenging run or ride to far-flung checkpoints dotted throughout the Tangara Trail network.

2025 Intervarsity Champs

In 2025, the Intervarsity Rogaining Championships will be held in conjunction with the NSW 24-hour State Rogaining Championships. The event is being held in iconic Australian bush landscape within the stunning wilderness of Mt Werong on the 13th-14th of September. Mt Werong lies within the westernmost section of Blue Mountains National Park, only a 3-hour drive west of Sydney and around 50 km south of Oberon.

Event details are now on-line at the 2025 NSW Championships website.

Each year, funding is provided by the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation (NAMSF) to cover the travel costs of one team from each state to compete in the Intervarsity Championships. Team members must be students at the same Tasmanian tertiary institution. Preference will be given to full-time undergraduate students, although part-time and postgraduate students are still encouraged to apply. The funding typically covers the cost of flights, bus transport to and from the hash house, and accommodation (if necessary) for a team of two to compete. Team members are responsible for additional costs, such as the event entry fee.

Now is the time to convince someone to be your teammate if you haven't already! Please send your team nomination to Jaymee Knoll at  by the 20th of July. Nominations can be brief, and just need to state the University or TAFE you both attend, whether you are undergraduate or postgraduate, and your experience and recent results at rogaines or related sporting activities (e.g., orienteering or trail running). The successful team will be informed very soon after this deadline. If you have any questions, please ask Jaymee, who was a NAMSF funding recipient in 2022.

Coffeee Bean Winners' Report

Caffeinated winners - David Atkinson and David Brooke

Written by Dave, with contributions from Dave.

Huge credit to the organisers and volunteers; yet again, an exceptionally run event. Everything worked like clockwork, which is more than I can say for our route planning once we hit the course.

We started with a bold but sensible strategy; aim to clear the map but identify a few checkpoints we could cut if needed. It felt united but I should’ve known it wouldn’t last.

Almost immediately, I could feel things drifting off-script. Dave was moving like a thoughtful tortoise, while I tried to set a reasonable pace. Apparently, I needed to “just relax.”

I had concerns about us blowing out early, so I suggested we take it easy at the start. Dave interpreted that as an open invitation to shout motivational quotes to "get me pumped" at each checkpoint, whilst depriving me the opportunity to stop and catch my breath.

While Dave was rushing everywhere, I settled in to doing most of the navigation—after all, I had the map, the time, and the best sense of direction (arguably). Meanwhile, with his enthusiasm, Dave took the reins on the answer sheet, scribbling down answers whilst keeping us below our target pace of 6min/km.

It worked well until Dave confidently navigated us into what turned out to be a dead end behind a residential care facility. There’s nothing like standing behind a locked gate, while being told to “just relax”, to really test team morale.

Tensions came to a head when we reached a decision point in West Launceston with two route options. As the navigator, I insisted on the flat and sensible one. However, in his frenzied state, Dave wanted the other unnecessarily vertical option. We settled it like adults: rock-paper-scissors. I lost and followed Dave as he charged up the hill.

Even while we were approaching the finish, moments before the 4 hours mark, Dave kept reminding me to “just relax”. We crossed the line seconds after the four-hour mark. The time penalty was minimal, however, could have been avoided entirely if he didn’t spend so much time relaxing.

The miniature time penalty was only a small loss when we received our result. Somehow, despite the multiple-choice format and only three options per question, Dave, in his chaotic haste managed to get one wrong. Thankfully it was only one, and low value, so it didn’t cost us the win.

All said and done, it was an excellent day out. The course was fun, the terrain varied, and the weather perfect. Huge thanks again to the organisers and volunteers for putting on such a great event. We’re already looking forward to the next one. Hopefully Dave will bring his A-game.
